J.V. defeat FV

The first half, looked a bit slow, the girls didn’t seem to be playing together too well. The second half they went full force, with Victoria scoring the winning goal, making the score 1-0. With Kasha’s amazing save, FV was unable to score. Way to go girls.

F/S pull out another win against FVHS

Vikings had several early scoring opportunities, however, it wasn’t until the 2nd half that Jennifer Goud scored the goal that sealed the deal. Our girls played a great game! Awesome job Vikings!!!

F/S defeat Edison 2-1

Speed and determination were key to the win against Edison on their home field. Rachel Cortz blazed by Edison’s defense scoring both goals. Way to go Vikings!

Marina Girls Varsity versus Edison: Rematch Game

In an exciting and always anticipated game, Marina Girls Varsity played Edison on Tuesday sadly losing their rematch game 1-3. It is not to say, though, that both teams didn’t have their fans on the edge of their seats the entire game. First half ended with both teams 0-0 in a tie. Edison had some great opportunities and shots on goal but thanks to the defensive brilliance of Kelly Mitsumori and miraculous saves of Arianna Sisson these goals were deflected.

In the second half, Edison scored putting the score at 1-0 but Marina came back on a Jordan O’Brien corner kick that was headed into goal by Erin Huff equalizing the score 1-1. The later two goals of Edison were the result of two breakaways where in both cases the ball was carried down the sidelines to goal. Final score: Marina 1, Edison 3. Next game is away at Fountain Valley on Thursday, February 04, 2010, at 3:00 PM.

Marina Loses Steam to Los Alamitos

On Friday, in the third game this week within hours of completing their school finals, Marina Varsity girls tried hard but struggled running out of steam early in the game and falling flat against a quicker, stronger, and more refreshed-looking Los Alamitos team. Game final score: Marina 0, Los Alamitos 5.

Marina versus Esperanza Rematch

On Thursday, Marina played their second of the home and home games against Esperanza. Monday’s win against Newport Harbor had the girls’ spirits and energy running high going into the game despite it being finals week and despite the Vikings missing the entire prior week of practice due to rain. The Vikings’ early game-lead pattern continued when a few minutes into the game Emily Locken took advantage of a defensive deflection and headed the ball into the goal taking Marina into the lead 1-0. Despite the fact that key defensive player, Kelly Mitsumori, was out of the game injured, defense made up of Breazy Luhrsen, Michaela Rand, Colette Allegre and keeper, Alex Farmer made a valiant and strong effort defending Marina’s goal to maintain Marina’s lead. However, that lead was shortly lost when close to the end of first half, Esperanza scored on a corner kick evening up the score 1-1.

Second half of the game saw Arianna Sisson in goal as keeper coming off a 4-week concussion injury. Throughout the second half of the game both teams battled the ball to try to take the lead. It was an amazing Esperanza corner kick perfectly placed in the upper right hand corner by the top goal bar that stole any hope of Marina winning the game. Final score Marina 1 and Esperanza 2.

Marina takes a loss to Newport Harbor 2-1

Marina’s j.v. dominates the first half of the game. Shannon makes two attempts at scoring a goal, but no luck when shr kicks the ball over the goal post. Brittany also attempted to score with help from Victoria but was also uhlucky. Haley makes a goal kick to the other side of the field and Shannon kicks it in the goal. The second half Newport Harbor ties making it 1-1. Unfortunately Newport Harbor scores by a bad bounce off of the side post into our goal. Final score Marina 1, Newport Harbor 2.

F/S defeated by Newport

In the first half of the game against Newport, Jennifer Goud made a clean, hard shot and scored to put the Vikings in the lead 1-0. The 2nd half Newport came back to make the score 1-1. After a break for an injury on the field, they decided to play the remaining 11 minutes left on the clock. Newport capitalized to take the lead with 2 quick goals. Ivy, we hope you have a quick recovery!

Marina Sinks Sailors in OT

The game lasted longer than we all had hoped for. The Marina girl’s struck first at the 2:00 min. mark from two of our captains (7) Breazy Luhrsen with the assist and the goal by (17) Jordan O’Brien. It was a cool looking goal with some nice first touches. Coach Mike kept the subs going in the front to keep our girl’s fresh. After the first goal Newport Harbor was putting a lot of pressure on the defense. Thanks to (19) Kelly Mitsumori and the other girls for doing an unbelievable job keeping Newport from scoring. Kelly has just returned from a pulled hamstring and is not at 100% yet, that’s got to be hard. The shots on goal at the end of the first half were 6 for Newport Harbor and 1 /score for Marina.

In the second half, both teams came out playing real hard. Then at the 9:10 mark of the game, Marina’s other captain (11) Genessee Banks stuck one in the net unassisted from about 25 yards out. Marina combo of (17) Jordan O’Brien and (11) Genessee Banks put on a little show and took two nice shots that somehow couldn’t find their way into the net. Those girls look great together. Marina up 2/0, but that didn’t stop Newport.  They put their first goal in off one of two in a row corner kicks at 29:10 into the game. And their second at the 32:00 min mark. After that the Marina girls seem to step up and play with some real intensity. With time running out (17) Jordan O’Brien passed the ball to (10) Maddie Edwards in the left corner and she put the ball in the far corner of the net. Great shot Maddie! Just at that time the man in the yellow shirt had just blown his whistle to end regulation time. So to overtime they go. The second half ended with Newport Harbor with 7 shots on goal to Marina 6 shots on goal. Good job (0) Alex Farmer!

Two 10 minute periods for over time and it was all fast and tough soccer. The first period ended with a 2, 2 tie. With both teams going full speed. The second overtime period was a lot different. Marina took 2 yellow cards. That’s when Coach Mike changed things and put (7) Breazy Luhrsen back in defense and that tightened that right up. It looked like Marina could not get a break anywhere, then they got it in a corner kick at 5:33 mark of the second overtime. (17) Jordan O’Brien took the kick and it hit (10) Maddie Edwards in the back, came off and was kicked home by (12) Becca Cruz for the go ahead goal 3 to 2 Marina.  Newport did have their chances but Marina healed them off for the win.

Special props goes out to those girls in the front that kept coming in and putting pressure on the Newport goalie. (4) Devon Shinn, (10) Maddie Edwards, (16) Paola Saieh, (20) Emmy Richards and (21) Dena Wasielewski. Also special kudos for the big heart of (24) Emily Locken, she works so hard, thanks girl! It shows that working hard and working together as a team that we can win. That’s two wins in a row.  Girls, can we say three??  Keep it up.

J.V. ties Fountain Valley

The girls j.v. team ties Fountain Valley 1-1. The girls played an incredible game! They all played aggressively and you could tell they wanted to win! Fountain Valley scores in the first half to take the lead, but in the second half Marina fights back when Diana scores the tying goal! Brittany,Amy, and Danny had an incredible game! As did everyone else! Keep up the pressure girls!
